Reflecting on the Principles of Connectivism & Learning

http://mywebspiration.com/view/390024a26b39

My network has changed the way I learn by enabling me to enhance my education, while at the same time hold a steady job and be at home with my family. I am able to take care of family and personal needs and still organize my time to study and get my work done in a timely fashion. The networks provide various forms of information to facilitate my learning through virtual, social and learning networks .

Studying online has been one of the most rewarding tools in technology for me. The online resources we have been given to be successful in this class have been very productive in facilitating learning. I am provided with the resources, references and web link to acquire additional information on specific subject matters. Some of the tools that are incorporated in this online study are; webspiration, timelines, youtube, eBooks, Walden library resources, blog and etc. These tools are essential for providing richer understanding of new concepts and ideas.

Another digital tool that has been very beneficial to my learning is Skype. Skype is a communication system. After Setting up a Skype account, I can communication with class members and my Instructor online. With this program I am able to talk to other colleagues on my computer and at the same time continue to do my work online. The grand thing about Skype is that it is free when you access it through your computer. Skye can be use on your home phone, online, SMS, voicemail and you can also forward calls.

Diigo is another great digital tool that has been very accommodating in learning. Diigo allows you to bookmark website and access them on any computer any time any where. The power tools on Skype enhance your experience for online browsing and interactions and for information gathering and sharing. This website allows you to store and tag your bookmarks online, highlight information on the web, share your bookmarks, mark bookmarks as unread, and add a smart folder for saving. Furthermore, with Diigo, you can tag bookmarks, automatically post bookmarks to blog, import other bookmarks, add Diigo to widget and save information on Diigo to delicious.

When I have questions, the essential ways I gain new knowledge is by researching the information on the web and by asking a more knowledgeable individual. Additionally, I will check-out books to read and discover the answer. If my question is in reference to a class I am taking, I will ask my colleagues in person or by emailing the class and posting the question on line. Furthermore, I will also ask my instructor for the answer in person if accessible, emailing, calling or stopping by his / her office. If I have questions that are related to personal matters, I will call by way of telephone, or even take a trip to his / her home to converse face to face. Sometimes I will send a personal email.

Learning and knowledge rest in diversity of opinions.

Siemens referenced in his article that learning and knowledge lie in the diverse opinions of others. I can agree that learning and knowledge do involve diversity of opinions, however, learning is not solely the opinions of others. Learning involves a variety of different faucets. We learn from prior knowledge, experience, perception, reality, and comprehension and etc. In the past, the traditional way of learning resided in behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism. The last forty or more years a new twist has come into play known as technological advancements. Most of today’s’ learning is by way of the World Wide Web. When we are learning we incorporate the learning attributes that are prevalent in the 21st century learning environment.

Learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources.

According to Siemens’ article on Connectivism theory, learning is a process of connecting specialized nodes or information sources. I must agree with this theory because when we learn, we use different resources to research and discovery new information to become more knowledgeable. We obtain knowledge through our social networks, Virtual networks, personal networks, as well as prior knowledge and experiences.

Learning may reside in non-human appliances.

I agree with this statement regarding the Connectivism theory of learning, which is learning may reside in non-human appliances. However, learning does not always occur through man-made tools or objects, we learn from other individuals, nature, and our environment or culture. Additionally, we learn from our prior knowledge and experiences.

Capacity to know more is more critical than what is currently known.

Siemens articulates in his Connectivism theory that the capacity to know more is more significant than what is currently known. I can not agree with this theory one hundred percent. There is an old saying that states “If it’s not broken don’t try and fix it”. In other words depending on the scenario, what is already known about a particular situation could be better that any new knowledge that could be obtained. For example, I change the recipe of a particular dish that was already superb to make it better. What I succeeded in doing was making a great dish worse. Another example, the new Language Arts program that was adopted in my school this year, was not as successful as the past series which had shown tremendous gains in academic success amongst the majority of our students. This new program may have work well with other students but had little impact on ours. This is why I say it depends on the situation but not only the situation, in this case it had relied on the type of students that were being served.

Nurturing and maintaining connections is needed to facilitate continual learning.

According to our resources with reference to Connectivism theory, nurturing and maintain connection is needed to facilitate continual learning. I do agree with this theory because learning resides within the individual. One must have a desire to learn and be connected with the essential tools and resources to maintain and continuously facilitate learning.

Ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.

I agree with this theory that one must have the ability to see connections between fields, ideas and concepts. This skill is essential to learning because we are living in a society where things could change daily and we must be able to see the connection in order to move forward. If we lack the ability to see correlation between ideas and concepts we could be stuck in the past and miss the opportunity to grow and expand our knowledge. Furthermore, an easier and more simplified method could make life easier for us all.

Currency (accurate, up-to-date knowledge) is the intent of all connectivist learning activities.

I agree with (Siemens, 2005). It is important to have current information on learning activities because this statement the author made is so true. “Decision-making itself is a learning process. Choosing what to learn and the meaning of incoming information is seen through the lens of a shifting reality. While there is a right answer now, it may be wrong tomorrow due to alterations in the information climate affecting the decision (Siemens, 2005).”
